Webuild Training Academy: Bridging Skills Gaps in Southern Italy

Provided by: idp

Webuild, Italy’s largest infrastructure and construction group, launched its in-house training academy in 2023 as a response to critical skills shortages, particularly in the country’s southern regions. Faced with a shrinking labour pool, high youth unemployment, and a disconnect between formal education and industry needs, the company decided to proactively train its future workforce. The Webuild Academy offers intensive, job-specific courses in construction-related fields such as tunnel-boring machine operation, pipe-fitting, and project logistics. The programmes are located near major infrastructure sites in underdeveloped areas, like Sicily, to directly support local employment. The company aims to recruit 3,000 new employees from its academies by 2026, contributing both to national workforce development and regional economic regeneration. This case demonstrates how private-sector leadership can complement public education and labour policies. It addresses not only technical skills but also provides participants with stable employment prospects and long-term career paths—effectively transforming informal or precarious labour into structured, professional roles. The model is especially relevant for other MSMEs and large firms operating in regions facing demographic and socio-economic decline.
