Fincantier's Masters of the Sea Programme: Accelerated Vocational Training for Technical Roles

Provided by: idp

Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilders, launched its “Masters of the Sea” programme in response to Italy’s growing shortage of technical professionals in the maritime sector. The initiative, introduced in 2023, aims to provide practical, industry-specific training and job placement for young people, many of whom lack access to effective vocational education. The programme attracted over 17,000 applicants and has already trained and hired more than 80 young workers. One of its key strengths lies in bridging the gap between what students learn in traditional education settings and the hands-on skills required in modern shipyards. The training includes specialised instruction in electrics, fitting, and mechanical systems, directly aligned with Fincantieri's operational needs. This best practice showcases how sector-leading companies can play a pivotal role in developing vocational pathways and addressing MSME workforce shortages in high-tech manufacturing. It also highlights the power of employer-led training in improving youth employability, especially in Northern and North-Eastern Italy.
